The Sanctuary, established on 17 November, 1965, is 113 acres in extent and coursed with several  miles of well marked and well maintained trails for your enjoyment however  wetter  times may make walking muddy and awkward. The preserve features vernal pools and some of the most accessible swamplands of the region. In contrast, mature forests mantle the higher relief composed of relict sand dunes thousands of years old.

Authorized educational and research programs and proposals are welcomed. A large file of information, including an authoritative flora and avifauna, for the Sanctuary is available for your guidance. Wheelchair access is available at the Oakmont St. Trailhead. Please direct inquiries and informational contributions to Carl J. George, Chairman of the Management Committee and Steward, HMBC, Department of Biology, Union College. Schenectady, NY 12308.

When I would recreate myself, I seek the darkest wood, the thickest and most interminable, and to the citizen, most dismal swamp. I enter a swamp as a sacred place – a sanctum sanctorum. There is the strength, the marrow of nature. The wild-wood covers the virgin mould – and the same soil is good for men and trees. Henry David Thoreau.
